Snoring is very common and for most people is not a serious problem. But in some cases it can be a sign of a serious health
problem and may be a sign of a sleep apnea. Snoring occurs when floppy tissue in the airway relaxes during sleep and vibrates.
Most snoring is caused by an enlarged soft palate and uvula in the back of the mouth. However, tonsil, tongue, adenoids and
congested nasal passages can also contribute to the sound. Sleep apnea consist of periodic stoppage of breathing during sleep.
Untreated sleep apnea can increase the chance of having high blood pressure and even a heart attack or stroke. It can also
increase the risk of diabetes and the risk for work-related accidents and driving accidents.
Other signs of sleep apnea include:
- memory or learning problems
- morning headaches
- frequent urination at night
- disturbed concentration
- feeling of depression, mood swings
- impotence.
Early diagnostics and sleep apnea detection can prevent patient from:
- heart attack
- high blood pressure
- stroke
- hormonal disorders etc.
